गेल्या काही कालावधीत २०१० चे दशक गाजवलेल्या अनेक क्रिकेटपटूंनी निवृत्ती जाहीर केली. यात आता दक्षिण आफ्रिकेच्या डेल स्टेनचाही समावेश आहे. स्टेनने मंगळवारी (३१ ऑगस्ट) सर्व प्रकारच्या क्रिकेटमधून निवृत्ती जाहीर केली त्याने सोशल मीडियावर पोस्ट शेअर करत सर्वांना याबद्दल माहिती दिली. त्याच्या निवृत्तीनंतर त्याला पुढील आयुष्यासाठी अनेक आजी-माजी दिग्गजांनी शुभेच्छा दिल्या.
स्टेनने निवृत्तीची घोषणा करताना लिहिले की ‘आज मी मला सर्वात जास्त आवडणाऱ्या खेळातून निवृत्ती घेत आहे. कडूगोड क्षण पण मी कृतज्ञ आहे. कुटुंबापासून ते संघसहकाऱ्यांपर्यंत, पत्रकारांपासून चाहत्यांपर्यंत सर्वांना धन्यवाद. तुमच्याबरोबरच प्रवास मस्त होता.’
स्टेनने त्याच्या निवृत्तीची घोषणा केल्यानंतर अनेक आजी-माजी क्रिकेटपटूंनी प्रतिक्रिया दिल्या आहेत. स्टेनचा माजी संघसहकारी एबी डिविलियर्सने स्टेनला सर्वकालिन दिग्गज असे संबोधताना लिहिले की ‘दिग्गज खेळाडू, उत्तम व्यक्ती, शानदार आठवणी!’

स्टेनने त्याच्या आंतरराष्ट्रीय कारकिर्दीत ९३ कसोटी सामने, १२५ वनडे सामने आणि ४७ आंतरराष्ट्रीय टी२० सामने खेळले आहेत. त्यात त्याने कसोटीत २२.९५ च्या सरासरीने ४३९ विकेट्स घेतल्या आहेत. वनडेत त्याने २५.९५ च्या सरासरीने १९६ विकेट्स घेतल्या आहेत, तर टी२०त त्याने १८.३५ च्या सरासरीने ६४ विकेट्स घेतल्या आहेत.
याशिवाय स्टेनने १४१ प्रथम श्रेणी सामने खेळले असून यात ६१८ विकेट्स घेतल्या आहेत. तर १८० अ दर्जाच्या सामन्यांत त्याने २८४ विकेट्स घेतल्या. तो त्याच्या कारकिर्दीत २२८ टी-२० सामनेही खेळला. यात त्याने २६३ विकेट्स घेतल्या. त्याने आयपीएलमध्ये ९५ सामने खेळताना त्याने ९७ विकेट्स घेतल्या आहेत.
