दक्षिण आफ्रिकेचा माजी कर्णधार एबी डिविलियर्सने शुक्रवारी (१९ नोव्हेंबर) सर्वप्रकारच्या क्रिकेटमधून निवृत्ती घेत असल्याचे जाहीर केले. त्याने सोशल मीडियावर एक भावुक पोस्ट करत त्याच्या निर्णय घोषित केला. त्याने हा निर्णय घोषित केल्यानंतर क्रिकेटविश्वातून मोठ्या प्रमाणात प्रतिक्रिया उमटल्या.
डिविलियर्सने निवृत्तीची घोषणा करताना ट्वीट केले की, ‘हा खूप अविश्वसनीय प्रवास होता, पण मी सर्वप्रकारच्या क्रिकेटमधून निवृत्त होण्याचा निर्णय घेतला आहे. अंगणात मोठ्या भावांसह सामने खेळण्यापासून मी हा खेळ पूर्ण आनंदाने आणि बेलगाम उत्साहाने खेळलो. आता मी ३७ वर्षांचा झालो आहे. ज्योत आता तितकी तेजस्वीपण जळत नाहीये.’

डिविलियर्स त्याच्या चौफेर फटकेबाजीमुळे ‘मिस्टर ३६०’ म्हणून ओळखला जातो. त्याने त्याच्या अनोख्या फलंदाजी शैलीने अनेकांची मनं जिंकली आणि त्याचबरोबर मोठमोठे विक्रमही केले. वनडेत केवळ ३१ चेंडूत शतक करण्याचा विक्रमही त्याच्याच नावावर आहे.

भारताचा कर्णधार आणि डिविलियर्सचा रॉयल चॅलेंजर्स बेंगलोर संघातील सहकारी विराट कोहलीने लिहिले की ‘आमच्या वेळच्या सर्वोत्कृष्ट क्रिकेटपटू आणि मला भेटलेल्या व्यक्तींपैकी सर्वात प्रेरणादायी असलेल्या व्यक्तीस, तू जे काही कमावले आहेस त्याचा तुझ्यासहित सर्वांना सार्थ अभिमान राहिल. तू रॉयल चॅलेंजर्स बेंगलोर संघासाठी जे काही केले आहेस, ते सदैव आमच्या स्मरणात राहिल. फक्त क्रिकेटपुरतेच आपले नाते मर्यादित नव्हते आणि पुढेही ते असेच कायम राहिल.’
विराटने पुढे लिहिले की, ‘तुझ्या या निर्णयामुळे मला खूप दु:ख होते आहे. परंतु मला माहिती आहे, तू घेतलेला हा निर्णय तुझ्यासाठी आणि तुझ्या कुटुंबासाठी योग्य असेल. आय लव्ह यू.’ विराटच्या ट्वीटवर एबी डिविलियर्सने उत्तर देताना लिहिले की, ‘लव्ह यू टू भावा’
